They will also plant the seeds for corn, pole beans and sunflowers today.
The Three Sister's Garden is a Native American gardening system that is based on folklore but now we know it is also very scientific. Each of the plants interact with the others to help support best growth and protection. The corn provides a support structure for the pole beans to grow up. The beans provide nitrogen into the soil that the corn needs. The pumpkin or squash help keep the soil moist with their big leaves which are also a little prickly and deter small animals from nibbling on the veggies. The sunflowers provide beauty!
The second graders are studying seeds, plants, habitats right now in school so the garden fits right in with what they are doing. Next year when they are third graders, they will study about the Native Americans. Their studies and their harvest will be more meaningful!
