Nature Walk

Yesterday the 3rd graders came out to the garden for a chance to make observations using their 5 senses. They took a nature walk through the garden and had to remain silent so that everyone could really focus on their observations and use their sense of hearing as well. I am amazed at what they discovered and their enthusiasm! Some of the observations were comparing baby corn or squash to their mature counterparts; knocking on a squash and noticing that it sounds hollow; tasting tomatoes, green beans and broccoli and realizing how different they taste than those from the store... They also came up with some improvements for next year like adding our in house compost to the soil; adding worms and ladybugs; growing strawberries... Hopefully we will be able to implement several of their ideas!

Next week we have a Garden Enrichment class starting where we will make plans for next year, paint signs and learn how to put the garden to sleep for the winter.
